As much as I loved having my hair super short, I think the inevitable happened and I got a little bored with my lack of styling options. I was a little uncertain because my hair is so thin and straight, but then it just so happened that I went one too many weeks without a haircut and there was a bob! Almost. My shortest layers still have a little way to go, and once they're at the right length I'll get everything cleaned up. I'm keeping the back short, above the nape, because I can't stand hair touching my neck! I've been practicing pin curl sets the past week or so and they're not quite stellar enough to talk about yet, so I thought I might share a little of my hair inspiration!

Norma Shearer.

Jean Arthur - I would take her hair and/or her voice!

I forget who I nabbed this from! If it was you, let me know!
Any tips or suggestions you can offer about pin curls or achieving these 'dos? I've never exactly been skilled in this area - if you were looking at my family photos you'd see lots of short hairdos on the ladies because none of us can figure it out!

Oh, these are some lovely hairstyle ideas! I'm afraid I have no advice, as I am hopeless. Luckily, I have a natural wave pattern that allows me to be pretty lazy about my hair and still "fudge" a sort of 30s-esque hair do. I wish I had hair that wasn't so thick and puffy, though. I think you're lucky to have naturally straight, light hair, as you can do a Louise Brooks style Dutch Doll bob without having to fry your hair with a straightener, like I would have to. Anywhoo...Instead of pincurls, have you considered trying out some waves? You'd look stellar with just that bit of wave to your hair like that last gal's! I'm thinking of growing my hair out a touch more, so I can do a mid-30s set with waves on the front and sides with some hair left over for little end rolls. We'll have to see how THAT goes. I get easily frustrated and end up going for a chop! Ah, the fun of vintage hair!
ReplyDeleteGrow it out, grow it out! You have the perfect face to carry off all the 30s styles!
ReplyDeleteI do want to be able to do plain ol' waves too, I'm just hopeless there as well, haha. The last photo (her outfit is so cute, I don't know what to look at more!) looks like a soft fingerwave, which I'm considering getting done once at a salon to see if that'll help me re-create it at home.
It's definitely a test of my patience! My arms have it the worst, though. Ouch!
Oooh! Love it! Love the last picture of the gal in slacks. SO COOL!
ReplyDeletegorgeous dames! check out the little sailboat at the hem of those pants in the last photo. that's just too good.
ReplyDeleteOh! I am so copying that last outfit. Ah-mazing. I had the short fine straight hair blues so I grew it out and now make gorgeous victory rolls. I keep meaning to cut it a little...
ReplyDeleteI think a 30s inspired look will suit you perfectly! :) I have always admired the smart little bobs that were popular then--I just can't pull off short hair to save my life. ;) rofl.
ReplyDeleteWith pin curls, the best advice I have is to get some setting lotion. I get mine at Sally's Beauty Supply, and it's invaluable for keeping those curls formed! That being said, I have to admit I'm quite lazy about pincurling my hair, especially over the summertime. Also because no matter how much I try, I hate sleeping on them. ;) lol.
Can't wait to see what you do with your hairstyle!!!

I have no advice, but I too love Jean Arthur.
ReplyDeleteAnd photo #3? I'd like her hair and entire outfit, please! Great pics.

ReplyDeleteOh I find pincurls are best for a 1930s hairdo. You could even wave the top bit, and curl the base.
